Issues

Below are some of the Issues that Scott Turner has a deep concern about and will work diligently to see implemented.

A Strong National Defense

We must continue to support our armed forces, and ensure that America has the strongest military in the world.  A strong military helps to secure the safety, freedom and quality of life of our citizens, now and for generations to come.

And I don’t just support the military, I support their mission.  I have worked extensively with wounded Marines as they have returned home to California from the theater.  I have seen the heart and passion of our servicemen and women.  They want to spread freedom, because they know their effort makes us safer at home.  And though they may have lost a limb, or have other serious injuries, they remain dedicated to the mission.  Our troops are the most dedicated men and women I have ever met.  We can all draw inspiration from them.  We must stand with them and their mission, and be courageous enough to support both.  I will do that here and in Washington .

A Safe, Secure and Efficient Border

We must continue our efforts to make our borders safe and secure, while improving the efficiency of our ports of entry.

We are all aware of the drugs that enter our country, and the biggest entry point is our border with Mexico .  Along with the drug crisis, we also face the threat of terrorists gaining entry through our borders. And additionally, we face the tragedy of immigrants literally dying to enter this country illegally.  I support individuals and families who seek a new and better life here in the United  States .  However, the legal processes already in place to make that possible must be followed.  We owe that to the countless individuals who have obtained citizenship legally, and to those who are currently going through the process.  For all of those reasons, we must strengthen our law enforcement along our border with Mexico , and I will fight for that.

We must also take a more serious approach to the potential for weapons of mass destruction to enter America through our ports. Currently, only a very small percentage of incoming cargo is inspected.  I will work in Congress to secure better technologies, and more hands-on inspections at our ports of entry.  We need to know what is coming into San Diego , and the United States .

An Educated and Ambitious Youth

My development as a young man began at the YMCA and the local recreation centers, playing sports and participating in various activities.  I could not have succeeded without the hands-on support I received from my family and my community.

We must not lose focus of the importance of developing the next generation of leaders.  I work with community groups often, and I see the problems facing our young people who have lost their focus, ambition and direction.  There will come a time to pass the baton, and as Congressman, I will always ask the question:  What are we doing to prepare the leaders of tomorrow?  The Internet, television, video games and pop culture must not take the place of the hands-on training and teaching of the scholastics, arts, music and sports that can come only from responsible men and women like you and I.

Pro-Family Values

As Congressman, I will stand for the sanctity of life, and for the strengthening of traditional marriage.

Faith-Based Leadership

I find strength in my faith.  It has pulled me through good days and bad.  Though I embrace people of all faiths, there is no questioning that the Lord is my Shepard.  And His is the compass that will guide me in Congress.  Your character can only be compromised when you stand alone, without the Lord’s strength to support you.

Support for Small Business

Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy.  Every large business was once a small business, and the majority of employees in this country work for small businesses. In Congress, I will work to be a strong voice of support for small businesses and their owners.  The government must work to promote these entrepreneurs by keeping the tax burdens light, and by decreasing stifling regulations. We should be encouraging practices that result in re-investing and new hiring.  Creating new, working taxpayers is a better way to maintain government revenues than increasing taxes on businesses.
